Take that, peanuts!

Riley had his peanut challenge today. He passed with flying colors.

We took our own peanut butter sandwich to the doctor's office for an 8:00 a.m. picnic. When I told Maddie and Riley that we were going to have breakfast with Dr. L, Riley's response was, "Dr. L no look Riley's penis!" That caused Maddie to become concerned and fret, "No Dr. L look Maddie's 'gina!" I reassured them that there would be no checking of the privates, just some breakfast, chit-chat, and toys.

It was rather nerve-wracking to hand Riley his sandwich, especially after the nurse reminded me to have my EpiPen at hand "just in case." With my heart in my throat, I handed the sandwiches over and crossed my fingers. And absolutely nothing happened except that Riley scarfed that thing down like he'd never been fed, as did Maddie. Dr. L did paperwork and such at her desk in the exam room, and we all just hung out for thirty minutes. I was even given a cup of coffee! Lucky, lucky me!

So bring on the peanut butter at our house. And we're cleared to try tree nuts, too, since Riley's RAST screen came back negative for those and there's no reason to think that Maddie will have an issue.

Of course, Dr. L did advise us to try tree nuts for the first time during office hours, you know, just in case.

My little one -- 2 3/4 -- might have asthma, does have mild ezcema (earlobes and corners of the lips mostly), and might have allergies (seasonal? cat...oh boy how would we find a new home for a 12 year old challenge of a cat?). I had decided that we will try strawberries, shrimp, peanut butter, and tree nuts in the parking lot of the ER. I'm thinking that this is a better idea.

So glad that it went well!

Oh thank goodness - anything that makes kinds seem "different" from their friends can be difficult for them, especially as they get older. And not having to worry about potential exposure to peanuts will be a load off your mind.

Congrats! Peanut butter cookies all round!

Mmmmm....nutter butters, Nabs and fluffer nutters. Virtually the only protein sources our she-child takes in sans complaint. So glad to hear the coast is clear (and that no "penis" and "'gina" examination was necessary for peanut allergy testing! ;) )

Your kids are a riot!

Good for you! Food allergies are one of my biggest worries as a parent. Every time one of my children successfully eats something new I breathe a sigh of relief. I'm jealous you have a doctor who was so hands on with the peanut venture. :-)

Congrats! I'm a member of the "peanuts in the office" club as well. We also had to do eggs that way. It was a great feeling when it was over.

What a great doctor you have! You are very lucky.
I'm glad your kids are allergy free. Go nuts with the peanut butter!

I've been reading your blog since the CNN article, and though I've never met you or your kids, reading that Riley is able to eat peanut butter makes me so very happy!! Congrats!!! :) I've really enjoyed reading about your adventures in parenting.

I've been reading your blog for awhile, but have never commented. I just had to say that your kiddo's comments at the doctor's office caused me to laugh out loud!

Glad your little one doesn't have a peanut allergy!

Btw, they are both so cute. And, you are doing a great job with them. Take care.

Yay for peanut butter! Your life just got a little easier! As vegetarians ourselves, PB and banana sandwiches have saved me repeatedly. (Too bad they didn't do the same for Elvis!)

SO great! And happy to have one anecdotal success story for my tree-nut allergic kid. I love the twins' concerns, too. Such great talkers you have.

Just the other day, I took some ice cream cake to LN's school and one boy oh-so-sadly asked if it had eggs... I felt horrible!

So YAY! I'm such a sap - I was so happy, I'm sniffling! Yeah, TAKE THAT PEANUTS!!

With Boog going on his first field trips at daycare this summer pre-voluntary pre-k, we've had to pack lunches. I don't know what I would have done without a freezer stash of uncrustables. They are perfect. Just pop a frozen one in the lunch bag with crackers, fruit snacks and juice boxes, and by lunch time, voila, perfectly thawed soft pb&j with no ice packs to deal with. Since he won't eat lunch meats and the lunchables chicken nuggets and pizza thingys seem just nasty, I am so happy he'll eat something relatively healthy for his lunches. Now, you, too can get the buzy (lazy?) mom's freezer stash. Yay!

YAYYY!!! I don't know WHAT I would do without PB&J in my daughter's lunch bag.
The "no look"-privates conversations is priceless!

That's great news! Their comments about the penis and 'gina are priceless, too.

YAY!!!

Glad he passed!!!

I'm WAITING so much for that day to come for my daughter --but since she's going on 7 I'm thinking it may NEVER come!!

Glad he did well!!!

While I'm thrilled for you that Riley passed the test - what a relief! - I want to express my sympathy for all the parents who will read or hear of Riley's success story and be wistful because their child isn't as lucky. The stress of having a kid with a life-threatening allergy will always be there for them.

Riley truly is in the minority, a very lucky boy.

just wanted to say that i am cautious with peanut butter because peanuts are so heavily sprayed ... maybe you are already buying organic peanut butter? I also love sunflower seed butter and pumpkin seed butter. glad that this whole world of good stuff appears to now be something riley can enjoy! Interestingly strawberries are another heavily sprayed fruit ...

Oh that's really comforting. "Just in case." Doctor humor is great, isn't it?

Time to break out the peanut butter cookies!

I thought it said "penis" instead of "peanut" the second it flashed on my screen! LOL! YEAH Riley! Love peanut butter in oatmeal!

Hope you all are enjoying as many variations of peanut butter as possible this weekend! Congrats on the test results.

Man, I haven't had peanut butter in forever. Not sure why. I bed Kiana would love it. Maranatha (despite the religiosity) is really good organic stuff with no additives.

Does Trader Joe's have a store brand?

Yum.

Congratulations Riley and fam!

Oh, I'm so glad all is well. I'm totally afraid of all the nut stuff and am just holding off.

I love that Maddie calls it her 'gina ... so does my little one, and it cracks me up. People always think she's talking about "china" ... um, no.

Bring on the peanut butter!
