You can't be good at it if you never do it.

Imagine my shock and surprise to log on to Blogger today and discover that I have not written a blog post in over three months.

Shock.

Surprise.

Both.

Yesterday, I interviewed a candidate for a position here where I work. It's a writing job. We talked a lot about the writing process and his approach to that process. The notion of the importance of a daily writing practice came up multiple times in that conversation. About a month ago, I thought about signing up for Alice Bradley's Practice of Writing course, but then I missed the deadline. A couple of weeks ago, someone said something about morning pages to me, and then when I was cleaning some books out of my basement bedroom, I found an old morning pages journal of mine.

Perhaps the universe is telling me something, although I think it's more likely that I have in this moment an awareness of something I already know, and because of that awareness, I see the signs all around me.

I can't be good at writing if I never do it, and writing is something I pretty much never do anymore. NoBloPoMo is two days away. Universe, if you are talking to me, I hear you. I hear you loud and clear.

I can't be good at this if I'm not doing it.

Here I go.

Up next: the story of being rear-ended by a FedEx delivery truck and the shocking amount of emotional upheaval that has ensued in the aftermath.
