Feeling Famous

Maddie, Riley, and I went out to dinner last night with some friends; we met at a local brewpub that had a playspace for the kids and good food for all ages. A similar group of two women and their kids were seated at a table kittycorner from us, and we interacted briefly a couple of times to resolve toy disputes and keep each others' kids from stealing food off strangers' plates.

It took me a while to notice that one of the women had twin girls. They were dressed very similarly, and until they were both in my field of vision at the same time, I hadn't realized that there was more than one of them. They were clearly younger than Maddie and Riley, but solid toddlers, adorable and curious and sweet.

I find that I'm drawn to twin moms like a moth to the flame. I miss my Boston twin mom community quite a bit. Out there, there were so many twins and higher-order multiples that it was starting to seem odd to have a singleton. Here in Oregon, I find that Maddie and Riley's relatively infrequent sibling status garners more questions and comments than it did back in Twinachusetts, but I also find that I miss the more common interaction I had with other twin moms.

And so, as I saw the women packing up and getting ready to go, I couldn't help but pop over and say, "Are your girls twins? My two are twins as well." I was not prepared for the response.

"Yes, I have to tell you that I read your blog and I know who you are."

!!!Really??? I felt so famous! We had a very nice conversation and she promised to send me information on the Portland Moms of Multiples group, in which she is very involved. She's already made good on that promise, and I'm looking forward to connecting with that group and finding the twin scene here in PDX. It would have been enough to have a nice dinner with a friend, but this was the icing on the cake. What fun!

A local brewpub with a play space for kids?? Man, am I ever living in the wrong state... That sounds fantastic!

Yes, PDX is wonderful that way. What's crazy is that can be one of many places here! Snick, maybe we'll meet you at the FHM holiday party.

How is your mum doing? Any news?

Ha! I love it! What a lucky meet-up.

As I consider moving "home" to Illinois, I know I'm going to miss the insane frequency of twins in Massachusetts, too.

Oh, that's so funny. My officemate reads my best friend's blog and has never met her in person and we live hours away from each other. But, while at the mall on Black Friday last year, she saw my BFF and knew it was her! It would have been hilarious if she introduced herself and told her that she knows her from blogland!

I'm having trouble getting past the beauty of imagining a brewpub with a playspace. Wow.

I had no idea that Portland's family-friendly brew pubs were unusual!

I read your blog and I have twins and I live in Portland and I keep thinking I'll run into you and say hello :)

And I'm curious to hear what you think of Full House Moms and Dads. I never joined, but I keep thinking I should...

Karyn and Merie: There are so many great things about Portland, but brewpubs with playspaces are one of the best. I'm actually an even bigger fan of the brewpubs that show second-run movies, but I don't get to those much these days.

Wow, now I'm famous. It was great meeting you last night. I'm so glad you came over to say hi. Not only didn't I want to interrupt your dinner, but I had no idea if your friend knew about your blog. I hope to see you at the FHM events. Next week's is going to be amazingly huge and fun.

FHM is supposed to be great. Clearly I am not a member but I have been to their sales and referred other people to them.

I do have a beef with them though. They say "MOMs and Dads" as if Dad doesn't deserve all caps and Mom does? I'm sure there is a reason but it is glaring for anyone not privy to that reason.

I think MOM is an acronym for mother of multiples. Otherwise, the dads would be DOM. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That is so cool, both that the woman knew who you were and that a brew pub had a play area for kids.

I'm moving to Portland.

Great news on your mom!! I can see how you are drawn to twin mom's. Just to be able to talk to mom's that are in the same situation is always the best. I use to read a blog that I found through you - Giovanna - really liked her blog but she gave it up. I hope she is doing well. She had cute kids. Happy Friday.

What a crazy coincidence!

Someone once came into my bar and knew who I was from my blog. That was kind of weird, but flattering at the same time.

How fun! I'm flying into Portland tomorrow, but family calls and we won't have a chance to explore. A pub with a playspace sounds right up my alley!

Oh, I DID once get an e-mail from another twin mom at my daughters' daycare who discovered me on the blogosphere. We've since become good friends.

Now how cool was that??? A chance dinner at a brewpub that hooks you up with another Mom of twins.
