Wanna Win a Book?

Want to win a beautiful book for your kid(s)? One that you'll enjoy, too?*

A friend of mine, Tammy, is a independent rep for Barefoot Books, a company based right down the road from me in Cambridge, MA. Their books are gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, multicultural, and did I say gorgeous? (Incidentally, their retail store is also an utter delight, so if you live in greater Boston, get thee over there, post-haste.)

Tammy has generously offered to give one of my readers the book of his or her choice. All you need to do is click through here, take a look around, and leave a comment letting me know which book looks most appealing to you. You have until midnight on Monday, February 2, 2009 to let me know which book you'd like to win. Two important things to know:
  • Clicking through on that link will give you 10% off any purchases you make through midnight on Monday;
  • Barefoot is having a big Winter Sale until midnight on Monday, so that 10% will be on top of already reduced prices.
In any case, on Tuesday, I'll pick a winner from the comments at random, and that person will receive the book of his or her choice for free from Tammy.

I don't do a lot of giveaways and promos on my site, but books in general are really wonderful and Barefoot books are especially wonderful. The company was founded by working moms, and they offer a better selection of multicultural stories than I've found anywhere else. They also have a good selection of titles in Spanish.

Go! Browse! Buy! And let me know what you'd like to win in the comments.

*Are my kids the only ones who consistently choose my least favorite books from our shelves? I swear, it's like they know which ones I detest and deliberately choose them any time we're reading. Like every night. And most mornings. And often throughout the day. I know that it's not all about me, but really, if I have to read Little Quack one more time, I might just go insane.

I can't decide between Zig Zag Zebra - Paperback and Tenzin's Deer (BIG DIFFERENCE). My 2 year old b/g twins are obsessed with art right now (daddy is an artist), so I am starved for new and exciting things to stimulate them. We spend most of our time with raw materials, but I do like to throw in some things to give them ideas periodically. That covers Zig Zag Zebra. Tenzin's Deer is something I have been searching for. We have Christian grandparents who keep buying bible story books and things of that nature and are drowning the kids with it. I have NOTHING against Christians. I believe Jesus lived, but do not adhere to any organized religion. I find myself most drawn to Buddhist ideals - this book is a perfect way for me to introduce some of those ideas to the kids. I just want them to be introduced to all ideas so they can make a decision on their own when they are older. Daddy is an Atheist. I totally respect his position and just want to find a good way to present all the philosophies to them. Thanks for the chance to win and the introduction to the site. I will definitely share it. I know so many moms who would love the items offered there. -Christa

Any of the "Bear" books would work for us - bears are big with my 21-month-old twins. Thank you for the giveaway!

Okay, everyone is saying why they picked their book, lol! I picked The Boy Who Grew Flowers as one I could read my nephews. As a single 40 year old I've recently had to accept that I will never be a mom and those little guys are the closest I'll ever get. And since it is about people with special gifts but who don't quite fit in with everyone else, it seemed to fit the relationship of sweet boys and their doting aunt (who is a fish out of water with most women by not having kids). I don't know if that makes any sense. LOL! But that is why I was drawn to that book.

I would have to pick the Book of MONSTERS!! We adopted our daughter from China two years ago when she was a toddler. A confident girl with great self esteem by day, her demons come out at night. While we struggle to parent this child with so many hard questions (way earier than we were prepared to answer them), I would love her to see that Monsters, real or imagined, exist for people all over the world and there are great stories crafted from the fears of others. To think that "Once upon a time" someone, somewhere, asked their parents to check under the bed for a Yeti!

I just wanted to share one of Barefoot's books with you- Motherbridge of Love. It's a beautiful book about adoption written by an anonymous Chinese mother who gave up her daughter. This is such a great example of the heart and soul of Barefoot Books- http://www.barefoot-books.com/us/site/pages/motherbridge.php.

Yes, my son always picked my least favorite books to read...thankfully my mom was there and she didn't mind, so I got a break from time to time.

How terrific, but Shortstack is in a funk and says "I don't want to win any books!"

I will comment however, on the worst kids book ever: Disney's Princess Story Book collection. This appalling set of stories puts an adult, romantic slant on every story. This tone is nauseating to mothers and fathers alike, causing them to substitute words and gag. Not only inappropriate and baffling to the young ‘uns, this tone teaches them the worst practices: I mean, imagine your teenage daughter just knowing by looking in someone’s eyes that she could trust them. Even though they are Tarzan and don’t speak English. This ethic and romantic veil is even applied to animals, for example when Bambi is wooed by whatsername the cute little doe, he can tell there is something more than just playing going on. It is truly SICK.

And I say this as a Mom who’s perfectly comfortable with most of the pink Barbie and Disney crap out there.

Barefoot books are gorgeous – I’ll keep an eye out for them!

The Great Race - it's lovely, and my 71/2 year olds can read it themselves (although I'll want to read it with them!), and it'll give us some depth to examining the descriptions of the Chinese zodiac signs on the placemats at Chinese restaurants.

Jack And The Beanstalk looks interesting. I am drawn to the artwork. Ha, Ha.

Oooh! So beautiful! Tales of Wisdom and Wonder for me, please. And thank you.

Anonymous said...

OOOO. Tough one. We really enjoyed "When I Took the Moon for a Walk" at the pediatrician's office a while ago. And I'm touched by "Daddy Island." But I think I have to go for...

"Thesaurus Rex"!

See, when I was little, my grandmother gave me a dictionary and a thesaurus for Christmas. I knew what a dictionary was, and I liked words, so that was cool. But I'd never heard of a thesaurus. I was, however, into dinosaurs. So I thought maybe this was a new one that I hadn't read about yet. I was initially disappointed, but (being a wordie at heart) I got over it pretty fast.

Anonymous said...

I'd love to win Animal Boogie.... unless you have a recommendation for books specially for/ about twins (almost 2)?
Thanks!

Too many good choices! I love Barefoot Books and always look for their imprint when choosing books at our tiny, rural (VT) library. If I could choose any single book for my son, it would be the "Barefoot Book of Knights" paperback and CD. He LOVES books about knights, and CDs are great to listen to on car trips back down to Boston to visit the grandparents. Thanks for this opportunity!

I like the look of "Come Here, Cleo!". My almost 2 year old is really into cats, only she calls them meow-meows. She LOVES books, and loves to find cats in book illustrations. She is also just starting some wobbly ABC's and 123's! So exciting to see stuff start to click. Hope I win it for her!

"Where's the Cat?" for us, if you please. I think ASH would have fun finding the cat--I've been wondering if at 2.5 he is too young for Where's Waldo, so maybe this would be a good intro to the concept. Thanks for reminding me about BB--I've never been to their store, amazingly, so I will put it on my list.

xo,
J

Ginevra said...

Oh yeah, and ASH totally picks my least favorites too. I have seriously comtemplated giving away Hop on Pop. I tried hiding one book after both T. and I were reading it to him 6+ times a day, but then all I heard was "Forest book? Forest book? Where forest book?" and if we explained that we couldn't find it, that would last about 5 seconds and then we'd be right back to "Where forest book go"? I empathize.

The music collections are beautiful. My g/b 2yr old twins have loved music since birth and i can never have enough music in our home! I would pick Arthur of Albion, so that my husband could read to our son, Tristan, about the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. My husband has always been fascinated with these stories and named our son after one of the Knights. Or i would pick one of the Goddess books for my daughter.
