Sluggish

Some stuff hit the fan at work this week and I've been busy/stressed/generally unmotivated/unable to post.

In lieu of a real post, here are some funny things the twins have done or said recently that I've been meaning to record for posterity:

Instead of "nothing," they say, "no nothing," as in, "There no nothing in this cup!"

[a wakeup call from Riley]
"I wanna go muffin' shoppin'! I wanna eat a blueberry muffin!"

[a frequent query from Maddie]
"Play RingARosyPocketPosey?"

[Riley, upon seeing me in the morning]
"Mama have leafs on shirt. Mama have boobies!"

[upon being asked what kind of special treat they want if they get a full row of stickers on their "No Screamin' in the Night" sticker chart]
R: "An ice cream! [long pause] Or a fish."
M: "A little baby." [Ed: I sure hope she means a doll.]

[Riley, requesting a snack]
"I need some raisins."
"We're out of raisins, love."
"Mama buy more grocery store."

[Riley, upon seeing a field of cows]
"Those doggies."
"Well, actually, honey, those are cows. What do cows say?"
"Those no cows. Those DOGGIES."
[to self] "Whatever you say . . . "

And I love listening to Maddie sing to herself. She loves to sing. She knows most of the words to "Baby Beluga," for example, and I'll hear her wandering around the house singing it to herself, or singing along in the back seat of the car. Lately her favorite song is from our Sesame Street CD collection; it's Pete Seeger and a bunch of kids singing a song called "Sweet Little Baby." She asks for that song all the time, and when it comes on, she just grins and sways from side to side and sings along, "Sweet little baby, sweet little baby . . . " So appropriate.

My work friend, who the twins call Shazam, came over last night with her partner to watch the finale of So You Think You Can Dance. I ended up getting really into the show; while overall, I think I still prefer American Idol, there was something compelling about the dancing. I'm sure many of you are grateful that I spared you my Idol-esque weekly analysis.

We had a great time watching the show, eating some yummy dinner, and drinking our fair share of wine. MMM. I didn't go to bed until after midnight! On a school night! It was CRAZY. And lots of fun.

As I watched the show, tearing up all over again during the reprisals of some of my favorite dances, I realized what it is about Idol and Dance that I love so much. You see, I don't like most reality shows; I don't understand shows like Survivor and Fear Factor that center around watching people do gross and dangerous things that you'd never want to do yourself. So not interesting to me! For a long time, I thought that I like Idol because it is at least somewhat talent based. Certainly it's more of a popularity contest than anything, but there is some talent involved.

But I realized last night that it's not the talent as much as it is the passion. I love seeing people do something they love to do, and do it well. It makes me so happy, even if they are doing something that I don't understand very well (like dancing) or have any talent for myself (like singing). There's just something so uplifting about seeing someone excel at their passion. For starters, finding a real passion in life is in and of itself a gift. Many people never find a life passion at all. And it's something else entirely to pursue that passion, to take the risks and see where it can take you. I admire that so much, and, at the risk of sounding like the total and complete cheeseball that I am, I feel privileged and honored to share the passion of the contestants on shows like Idol and Dance.

Happy weekend, everyone. We started it off with a pizza party at a friend's house—good times. I'm hoping to take the twins shopping for their special treat tomorrow morning, provided that they sleep through the night tonight. What will they choose? Will it be an ice cream? A fish? A little baby? Who knows! The rest of the weekend holds a birthday party, a BBQ with friends, and blueberry picking. For now, bed. That wine has totally caught up with me.

The twins are hilarious. I love that "Sweet Little Baby" song. We have that collection, and it was in heavy rotation for a while.

Hope you have a great weekend with the twins.

I love the idea of a No Screamin' in the Night chart. Sounds like that's going well!

I, for one, can't wait until it's time for your Idol updates again.

Sounds like you have a busy, fun weekend planned. Hope it's a good one!

...and speaking of wine, I've apparently had enough that I can't enter those word verification letters correctly.

That's enough from me, I think.

Maddie is happy. That is what I thought when I read about her singing. It is a great thing for a parent to realize. I often have had those thoughts about the kid. Of course I always followed the thought with, "Why is she so dang happy? Doesn't she know she is a x year old in a wheelchair from a family of divorce?" Really mostly joking, but still, children are so resilliant and amaze me constantly.

Hi there, Snick!

I love your blog! And because you inspire me, I am passing an award along to you! Find about it here on my blog.

Hugs,
Candice

(And I hope the "stuff" clears up for you this week. =) Hang in there.)

The "boobies" comment reminded me of when J was much younger, and saw me in a t-shirt with a cat on it. He pointed at it and said, "Mama! Titty! Titty!" Which of course was how he said "Kitty". It got really entertaining when he saw other women wearing shirts with cats on them - especially when hubs was taking him shopping ("That's how he says 'kitty' ma'am, I swear!"). Heh.

Hm, Ice cream or fish - you know, OI have often had that same dilemma! (I'd love to visit that store you take them too - you know, the one where you can buy a fish, or ice cream, or a little baby. Is it Costco?)

Mmmmm, muffin shopping... a kid after my own heart (muffin shopping is second only to cheesecake shopping in my book).

Oh! And you say the same thing I do! "Those are doggies, not horsies." "Whatever you say, kid."

Your kiddos are too darn cute!

I may be the only one (but I doubt it)- I TOTALLY wish you had done SYTYCD recaps!!

Happy weekend, Snick.

So what part of this wasn't a real post?
Too cute about the kids. And good to hear you have been having such a good time, and such excellent spirits (the kind you are in and the kind in you).

I often wake up wanting muffins too!

Sounds like your twins and my daughter are cut from the same cloth! Vivi is often singing Ring Around the Rosie and asking to go to the store to buy more raisins.

Snick -

I read your blog all the time, but never post. Today, we took a day trip to Boston. I looked for you and the twins E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E.! I kept expecting to see their familiar little faces.

I wonder what I would have done if I had seen you? I'd be the blubbering idiot running up to you, probably scaring you!

I actually like SYTYCD better than Idol! Shocking!

I never thought I would leave a comment on your blog (not just yours - I'm just a serial lurker), but I so had to after reading this - maybe Riley might like this Korean fish-shaped ice cream treat if he's good with the sleeping? (you might have to cut and paste the link together to make it work)

Of course, there's red bean in it, and it's either a beloved or hated staple for Korean kids (I fall on the "meh" side)... and I absolutely adore SYTYCD.
