I wish it made for a better story.

This is the story of snickollet.

Once upon a time, my name was Stacey Nichols. Back in Ye Olden Dayes of the Internet, all the way back in 1994, I got my first e-mail address, which was snichols@thatcollegeIwentto.edu.

"Snichols!" said my friends. "Ha ha! That rhymes with pickles! I think we'll call you that!"

And so some of them did.

Some number of years after that, I visited one of those friends in his hometown of Minneapolis. Our tour of the city included a stroll down Nicollet Mall. "Nicollet . . . Snichols . . . SNICOLLET!" I proclaimed.

And so it was from then on.

The k was added to the spelling when I married John and became Stacey Nichols Kim. S(tacey)nic(hols)k(im)ollet I have thus remained.

And now you know.

That's a great story! I always wondered if your name were Nicollette, but I think the real story is much better.

It makes for a pretty good story, if you ask me. And I don't think I ever heard the unabridged version.

Cute story!

Is it OK if I always think of you as Snickollet? Because, like Swistle, my mind cannot wrap around the real names when I have "known" you so long as your alias.

I think the quote of the day here is "I've always wondered", and I have! Thanks for answering the unasked question.

It's fun to see you becoming even more popular!

It's a great story; keep it! I'd been wondering too.

I always thought it was some French slang or something. At first I thought it was a real French word. I always studied Spanish in high school and college, so I felt like I was ignorant and never posed the question. Then I Googled it out of deep abiding curiosity and got your site or leads to it. So I thought then that it was a personal thing!

And here I have been, all these months (years?) thinking there was some clever Latin verb hanging around the place and feeling dumb cos I couldn't work it out. The real story is great...

Snickollet, I found your blog on CNN a few days ago. Ive read it beginning to end. Ive linked to it from my blog.
Youre an AMAZING woman. I was simply in awe while reading your blog. I initially clicked randomly at your archive and it so happened that I clicked on April 2007. Then I went back to the beginning. And when I came to April 11 2007 once again, I sat at my desk at work and cried.
Im glad to have "met" you and look forward to visiting you every day.
Bless you and your family.

How freaky it is to me that you explained this because I was going to send you a reply asking how to pronouce it! You read my mind.
And thanks for sharing.

yay! mystery solved.

Now, haven't people alluded to multiple Snickollets on Facebook? How is that even possible??

I wondered about that just the other day! Thanks for the story!

I wondered about the name of the blog. Very cute story. I must tell you I spent several hours yesterday reading through your archives, captivated, moved, laughing and crying. I promise to be a regular visitor...

I'm glad someone else's nickname came from their e-mail. After I got married my nickname became (and has remained) "scooper". Alas, I am neither a journalist nor a dog walker...

I am delurking after a year of reading because I have a very similar story.

When I headed to University, my name (Sarah + name of lead character in the "Eieio" song) was strangely shortened to: smacdo03@... Yep. Lots of us with that last name. In time, I became known as "Smac". And by the time I finished school, people didn't actually call me by my first name (other than my parents and now-husband). People would come up to me and say "I know that you are Smac, but what is your real name?".

Also - Spam in Holland is known as Smac. Mmm...sharing the nickname with heroin and with processed meat.

It could have been worse, though. Two other friends named Sarah ended up with the nicknames: Swill and Slow (pronounced Slough).

Thanks for sharing!

great story....
I worked with someone a few years back...
Her first name was Samantha.
Her last name was Lutty.

You figure out what her e-mail address was....*BTW-Samantha, not her real name, but it started with s)

I checked out your blog from the bcnn.com story and extend my condolences. I started out blogging in November, as my lovely wife was dying of cancer. She suggested doing a blog as therapy. My wife went to heaven, and I have kept up the blog to preserve whatever sanity I have left.

I hope you find peace.

I also found you blog on the cnn.com story and Also read it from your start. I was so touched by your experiences, and literally cried. I don't know you IRL, but I admire you. Thank you for opening my eyes, yes sometimes my DH is a bit annoying, but I still need to appreciate the fact that I still have him.

that's a great story Snick!!! It's very clever. :) So great that you appeared on that article. Hope you and the twins are well. Lots of love...

I liked the anonymity of your blog very much. But, I like knowing now what you and the kids look like, and the background on the name. I always wondered, is it pronounced phonetically or the French way?

And, I hope you get some kind of ads now that your readership has surely increased!

Makes sense... But I am more surprised to hear you have a real name too! ;) Been reading you for over a year and you have always been Snick to me.

Since we are kindred spirits of a sort...we both recently lost our spouses, I added you to my blog roll. I hope you don't mind, as I have the best readers in the world:)

Hey

I came across your blog from my daily feverish rounds on CNN. Its an obsessive headline and article skimming thing I'm afraid.

Anyway, I like the way you write and I will definitely be here to read on a regular basis. Hope that's okay with you.

I find blogging theraputic myself.

Hope you have a good day.

I did not find you through CNN, so now I feel out of the loop! I am writing to tell you that I am sorry for the reason you started blogging, but I am happy to see that you still ARE blogging.

I'm an old, retired blogger who sometimes wonders WHY am I an old, retired blogger. Is there ANYONE out there? When I'm writing I feel like I'm talking in an empty forest, but it's STILL therapeutic.

Happy Mother's Day weekend, Snick! I, too, found you through CNN earlier this week, then took a couple days to catch up with the entire blog. I'm so sorry I wasn't on board from the beginning. So much to say to you, but I'll keep it simple and say thank you for sharing your life. I'm totally captivated with your story, but truly not in a stalker way! I can't wait for more blog updates, AND PHOTOS! Those are fun!

I have been enjoying your blog for quite some time now. It was passed to me by a pal who had infertility and ended up doing surrogacies.
I got hooked on you because you were the first person who talked of losing someone to cancer with perfect honesty. You never tried to make it sound better than it was and you put into words what I felt.
It doesn't matter to me how you came by your pen name, only that you are here and doing what you do.
Thanks for that.

Love the name... I also saw the story on CNN and have spent much time at work (like you) reading your entire blog, I'm sorry for your loss, and you sound like a truly amazing mom. I live in the Boston area and know the horrors of Boston traffic.."head down and go!" Keep blogging, I love hearing about the twins, My husband and I are in the process of adopting twins, so keep me posted as to what to expect, please. Also a huge Red Sox fan, gotta love NESN!!!

Hello,
I found you through cnn.com, which a friend forwarded to me because we have something in common: I am a 34-year old widow of a 14-month old baby boy.
My husband died suddenly and unexpectedly in January 07 of a heart condition, when I was 8 months pregnant.
I appreciate your willingness to tell your story, and I enjoy hearing the thoughts of another woman who has learned to grieve and experience joy, at the same time.
I also just did a blog post about Minnesotans and am surprised and delighted to hear that you're from there. I've never been - am a California girl.
Take care,
Melodie
