To the Year 2007: Please Stop Fucking with Me

My Plans for This Morning
  • Run a 5K sponsored by PanCan with some friends and the twins (in the jog stroller)
  • Have brunch afterwards
  • Enjoy the sun

What Actually Happened

Dinner was gone all night last night, which made me nervous. She had been acting not like herself for a couple of weeks; she was listless and not eating much, but she's getting on in years and her vet checkup a few weeks ago had not shown anything out of the ordinary. When she didn't come home, though, I feared the worst.

I got a call on my cell phone from an unknown number just as I was arriving at the site of the 5K. For whatever reason, I answered. It was a neighbor, calling to let me know that she'd found Dinner under a bush in her garden, and that she didn't look good. I turned around and headed straight there, the twins in tow.

By the time I got to her, she was nearly gone. She was barely breathing, her eyes glazed over. My neighbor had taken excellent and gentle care of her, but there was nothing to do. Dinner's decline reminded me of John's. Her life just left her. My best friend arrived to take the twins on a walk, and I took Dinner to the emergency vet hospital. They put her to sleep right away.

I don't know what happened to her. Personally, I think it was just that her time had come. But maybe she ate something poisonous or maybe she got hit by a car and had internal injuries. I was so bereft at the clinic that I didn't even think to ask.

She'll be cremated and I'll get her ashes. It's going to be a regular mausoleum around here.

really sorry you have another shitty thing to deal with.

It's always hard to lose a beloved pet. I'm sorry. (And I've been thinking of you, because I know tomorrow will probably be an especially tough day for you. Sending virtual hugs your way.)

I'm so sorry. I know you didn't need that at this point in your life. I also want to add that tomorrow I am sure John will be looking down and admiring the wonderful way you are raising his children in his abscence. He will be so proud of you.

Oh fuck. That is just wrong. The incredible suckage of the timing is mind-boggling.
Sending my love to all of you.

I am so sorry. This is wholly fucking unfair.
I have a similar simple request of this year, and in fact think that it has rather far to go uphill to redeem itself.

Life so sucks sometimes. The year 30 yr old husband died, my kitchen burned down. I stood in the driveway and wondered how two things like that could happen to me IN THE SAME YEAR? Chaos cannot be explained...but it helps to know that it does suck.

I'm so sorry - it's so hard to lose a pet, especially so suddenly and with everything else you've dealt with and are dealing with.

So sorry about the unexpected loss. I'm glad you were able to be there at the end - it was so good of your neighbor to call.

I am so sorry. I'd been wondering about Dinner. (I loved your shout out to her in your post some time back.)

Ugh- that just supremely sucks. I think John & Dinner are snuggling and taking comfort in each other. Thinking of you...

wth? i think you should start a petition to the year 2007... maybe it'd finally leave you the hell alone. i'd sign it. i'm so very, very sorry to hear about your kitty. :(

Oh, Snick, I'm so sorry.

Gosh, I remember having to put my guide dog to sleep a few months after my mother died and when I was pg. It was almost just like the final straw to my sanity! The hardest part was leaving her there at the vets after it had happened. So sad for you and Dinner.

I hope you can take it easy today and have some time to relax. Take care.

Ugh. You just can't know how sorry I am that this happened. It's so hard to lose pets, moreso when it's unexpected. And wow, the timing is stellar, isn't it?

I've been thinking of you this morning. This would have to have been a hard day for you sans cat-lossage.

I wish for you, today, for some happy memories to make their way past what has to be heart-aching grief.

Klynn said...

I can only hope that the universe has something amazingly stellar in store for you in the years to come, because you've been through enough he11 this year to pay for an eternity of joy and happiness. I'm so sorry that this had to happen right now, or even at all. Love to you and the twins, Snick.

I'm thinking of you and am so sorry you had to go through this. Cats tend to know when it is their time, and often find a spot to hide away and just go to "sleep". Maybe that's what Dinner was doing. It's sounds very dignified and peaceful. Sending prayers of strength to you and the twins...

So sorry for the loss of your beloved kitty. You're right, the timing does suck. I think you're also right that it was her time. Cats know these things and will often try to find a place to be peacefully alone just before the end. I'm sure there was nothing you could have done and you are actually lucky that the neighbor found her so you could at least say goodbye, rather than just wondering what happened to her.

John has company now. Perhaps that is the thing that was meant to be.

I am so sorry. So SO sorry.

Our cat was once so sick he had to stay at Angell's ICU for several weeks. We were very lucky that he miraculously recovered, but for awhile no one there thought he was going to make it. I remember visiting him and having to walk out because it was too upsetting. There are no words to describe watching anything or anyone you love be so sick.

I'm so sorry.

Oh, crap, I am beyond sorry that you have this to deal with now. Thinking of you.

I think my comment just vanished!

Wanted to say I'm sorry for yet another loss. ugh.

Our dog died the summer my Mom had cancer. I tend not to list that loss out loud when I say I lost my Mom and Grandfathers in the same six months, but it was really hard to say goodbye to our little Austrailian Blue. It's hard to say goodbye to a pet.

Oh no! If you own a piano I do hope you keep it on the ground floor, and don't have a basement. And if you get the urge to move it with a crane, keep the babies indoors.

Sigh. I'm so sorry.

Oh Snick, I'm so sorry. I was thinking about you today as I expected it would be hard and now this. So competely unfair. The loss of a beloved pet is a pure heartbreaker and you don't need anymore. But I'm sure John and Dinner are having a fine time reuniting.

Sending hugs and kisses your way.

Kudos to your neighbor for handling the situation so adeptly, BTW.

I'm so sorry Snick. I have the same feelings about this damn year. Take comfort in knowing that John and Dinner were reunited. I hope that yesterday wasn't too difficult for you. You were in my thoughts.

Cripes, that's too much. I am so sorry this year has been the pits. That's a lame statement but yeah, it would be nice if things let up for you. John and Dinner have been reunited and rediscovering each other.

Much love to you, Snick. I'm so sorry. The universe needs to let up on you some time soon. I'm throwing amazing comfort and joy your way. If the universe diverts it, I'll bring it in person.

I'm so sorry. The cat of my soul was named Lunch; we had to put him to sleep a few years ago. I miss him still, but it cheers me up to think that perhaps he and Dinner will meet for a meal...

I hope you're holding up okay.

Bonnie Jacobs said...

So sorry about the timing of Dinner's death, yet glad you have a good neighbor who knew you would want to be there with her. I do believe we are reunited with our beloved pets and she is with John now. I send you strenth for this doubly difficult time.

Put my sweet cat Mandy to sleep just before I married Anna, 11 years ago. Had her since I was a kid. Still hurts to think about it. Sorry you had to do that, Snick.
